Wahpeton is located in Richland County in the southeastern corner of North Dakota. It has a population of approximately 8,500 and borders its' sister city, Breckenridge, Minnesota. Together these two communities have a population of about 13,000 residents. Wahpeton is known as "the most industrialized city in North Dakota," and is home to the North Dakota State College of Science. A large number of manufacturing plants are also located in Wahpeton. The Bois de Sioux River and the Otter Tail River join at Breckenridge and Wahpeton to form the Red River of the North, which is a prime fishing area. The town is also home to the only golf course in the nation where half of the course is in one state and the other half in another. A park near the golf course offers playground equipment, miniature golf, swimming, picnicking and softball/baseball facilities. Other Wahpeton attractions include Fort Abercrombie, the Richland County Historical Society Museum, the Prairie Rose Carousel, Chahinkapa Zoo and the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge. Two miles south of town is the Circus Monument, erected in honor of two workers killed by lightening in 1897 as they were erecting a circus tent. Circus performers still hold a memorial service at the spot whenever they perform in the area.

Wahpeton Weather & Climate

The southeast corner of North Dakota endures temperature extremes characteristic of its continental climate. This means long, cold, snowy winters and sunny, hot summers. Spring and autumn are short and highly variable. Meteorological events in southeast North Dakota can include blizzards, hail, rain, snow, polar fronts, tornadoes and high-velocity winds. In general, the state of North Dakota is quite dry, although summers can be quite humid with occasional thunderstorms. The southeastern corner receives the most precipitation in the state, more than 20 inches per year. Springtime flooding is a relatively common event in this region, due to the springtime melt and eventual runoff of rivers in the area.
