Grand-Forks
is the third largest city in North Dakota and serves as the county seat for Grand Forks County. The population of the city is approximately 96,000. Along with East Grand Forks, Minnesota, the two cities form the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is often called Greater Grand Forks or The Grand Cities. It's located on the western banks of the Red River of the North in an extremely flat region known as the Red River Valley. There are 14 parks located in the city of Grand Forks that offer tennis courts, swimming pools, playgrounds, ball fields and picnic areas. Sertoma Park features a lovely Japanese garden. The Grand Forks park district also operates 11 indoor and outdoor skating rinks and several golf courses are located in the area. The Greater Grand Forks Greenway is a large park that runs the length of the Red River and includes an extensive path system, large festival grounds, ski trails, and wildflower gardens. The North Dakota Museum of Art, called a cultural jewel on the prairie has received national praise for its visual arts, innovative programming and strong leadership. The museum has a permanent collection and also hosts frequent traveling exhibits. Other attractions in Grand Forks include The ARTSplace, Empire Arts Center, Browning Arts Gallery, North Dakota Ballet Company and the Chester Fritz Auditorium.

Northeast North Dakota is located in the Great Plains between the Rocky Mountains and the Great Lakes. This region of North Dakota has four distinct seasons with great variations in temperatures over short periods of time. It is characterized by long, cold sub-arctic-like winters and warm, sunny summers with occasional periods of extreme heat and humidity. Generally, however, temperatures are quite pleasant in summer. Spring and fall are short and highly variable. Thunderstorms occur in spring and summer, but in general, the climate in North Dakota is quite dry. Like other areas of the Great Plains, the warmest month is typically July and the coldest month is January. The wettest month is June and the driest month is December. Winters can be bitterly cold and the northeast corner of the state is sees the coldest temperatures in winter.
