Fargo
is the largest city in North Dakota, with a population of approximately 100,000 residents. It is located in the Red River Valley Region of southeastern North Dakota, just across the Minnesota border. In 2005, Forbes Magazine ranked the Fargo Metro Area number 4 in its "Best Smaller Metro Area" category. Together, the cities of Fargo, West Fargo and Moorhead, Minnesota, form the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan region. Known as the economic center for a large portion of eastern North Dakota, Fargo's motto is "Gateway to the West." This gateway city has more than 3,000 acres of public park lands for visitors, as well as residents, and 99 miles of hiking/biking trails run throughout the Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo region. You will also find plenty of opportunities for golf, tennis, swimming, skateboarding, softball and cross country skiing. Five state parks are located within a short drive of Fargo - 2 in North Dakota and 3 in Minnesota. These parks offer excellent fishing, camping, swimming, boating and canoeing, hiking, biking and snowmobile trails. The city of Fargo is also centrally located to several casinos that offer gaming, outstanding entertainment, fine dining and lodging. Cultural opportunities in Fargo include several museums and art galleries, along with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera and the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. Other attractions in Fargo are the Red River Zoo, Children's Museum at Yunker Farm, Bonanzaville and the Celebrity Walk of Fame.

Southeastern North Dakota is located in the Great Plains region. Due to its distance from both mountains and oceans, this region has an extreme continental climate. Southeast North Dakota is known for its long, cold, snowy winters and warm to hot summers. Spring and autumn are short and highly variable seasons in the Great Plains. In general, North Dakota is quite dry, although summers can be quite humid with occasional thunderstorms. The southeastern corner of the state receives the most precipitation, more than 20 inches per year. Springtime flooding is a relatively common event in this region, due to the springtime melt and eventual runoff of rivers in the area. Other meteorological events can include hail, blizzards, polar fronts, tornadoes and high-velocity straight-line winds.
